EXTRACTS FROM SOUTHERN PAPERS.
We, Napier Telegraph, hear that the Hon. Colonel Whitmore has bought the Movern Hill Station, Otago, from the Hon. Mr. John M’Lean. This station is the largest in the colony, and consists of 350,000 acres, leasehold, and 140,000 sheep. The exact figure Ims not transpired, but rumour says about £130,000 was the price paid for the property. The Thames Advertiser regrets to hear there is again great probability of a scarcity of coal at the Thames, and the price has already advanced in consequence. The Lake Wakatip Mall says : —“ The Superintendent calculates that the forests of Southland are worth five hundred millions of money! Their value is being rapidly diminished by the wholesale, and, We fear to a large extent wasteful, cutting going on.” Wk Napier Telegraph regret to learn that William Hunter, Esq., of Porangahau, one of our oldest and most respected settlers, was seized with an apoplectic fit on Wednesday, and is reported to be dangerously ill. U nder the heading “ played out,” the Marlborough Express notices that His Excellency has accepted the resignation by Mr. Walter Hippolite Pilliet, of Akaroa, of his appointments as a coroner within the colony, and as auditor of Courts of Law Trust Accounts for the District of Akaroa. Mr. Pilliet, however, does not intend to hide his talents under a bushel, for by our telegrams it will be seen he has offered himself as a candidate for the representation of Akaroa. Mr. Pilliet was at one time in Napier, and has held a variety of public appointments during the past twelve years. A startling rumour comes from Waipawa, it is that all the public-houses in that township are to be shut up. The Good Templars number two-thirds of the population, and are resolved to protest next licensing day, against the renewal of the licenses. Our drapers will read the following paragraph with interest:—“ Two Christchurch tradesmen have been fined for not having the New Zealand stamp on their yard measures, though the English stamp was on them.”
