THE V.RC. SPRING MEETING(own correspondent.) Melbourne, Oct. 31. The first day’s racing of the Victorian Racing Club's Spring Meeting took plaje to-day on the Flemington course. The weather was wet, and therefore there was only a moderate attendance. Ihe Governor and suite were present. The following are the results : — Melbourne Stakes. The latter however managed to land home half a head in front of First Chester, Thunderbolt lying fourth in order The closeness of the contest gave rise to most intense excitement, as the finish was so close that it was doubtful which was the winner, nntil the official numbers were hoisted and the excitement was intensified by the fact that the winner was twice wrongly posted. Time : 2 mins. 48 secs Colburg Stakes. Bohemian .. 1 Lantern ... ... ... 2 Parody 3 Nineteen started. Won by half alength. ROWING MATCH. (OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Sydney, October 30. A match has been arranged between Beach and Matthewson for the championship of the world, and £2OO aside. Ihe contest to take place on the 19th of December.
