TOA AGROUND ON SHOAL
VESSEL WARPED OFF MASTER’S FINE FEAT (Per Press Association.) WIIAKATANE, this day. Smart seamanship was shown by Mr. E. Cat heart, master of the Northern Steam Ship Company’s Toa, when he warped the vessel off the rocks where it was stranded at ti o’clock yesterday morning after being caught by a wave when leaving Whakatane for Auctiiand.
A fair sea running and the Toat.with the pilot launch, was in difficulties when a wave caught them as the vessels swung in ilie narrow rocky channel to head seawards. Lightly, laden, the Toa became unmanageable and struck a rock and grounded on a shoal among a nest of reefs. Lines were laid out on the rocks and the Toa was backed off after nine hours.
The main damage was a broken prapellor. a bent tailshaft and broken sheathing. The vessel is making no .vater. She will probably sail for Auckland with one engine, under the of the Otimai when that vessel leaves.
