Girl Guides and Voluntary Service A register has been compiled by the Girl Guides Association of New Zealand of all those members of the movement of 18 years of age and over who are willing to give voluntary service in. t‘he 'case of national emergency. The response in signing the forms has been very good. The register, which will foe kept at the Girl Guides’ Dominion headquarters, Hastings, will foe kept up-to-date in personnel, through co-operation with the provincial 'headquarters of the Guide Association.
Event in Those Days !
Under the heading of “Defence of Gisborne,” the annual report of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce for the year 1885-86, published on February 3, 1886, contained the following paragraph: —“Owing to the probability of the Empire being involved in war with Russia, the Government was asked what protection they intended to afford this port. The Government replied that their intentions were to erect batte'ries only at main ports, but aimed cruisers would protect the seaboard.”
Removal of Shops A start has been made with the work of clearing the site of the new building to foe erected on the corner of Bright street and Gladstone road for the AjM:P. Society. Four shops have to foe removed, and this work is scheduled for completion on July 25 so that the site will foe cleared ready for work to be commenced on the new structure. Built, many years ago by Mr. (Robb, these old shops contain about 50,000 ft. of kauri timber, which is still in a wonderful state of preservation. The Gladstone road frontage covers 66ft.
Cosmopolitan Club’s Year. Congratulations* on a highly successful year were extended to members of the Cosmopolitan Club, at Thursday evening’s annual meeting toy the club president, Mr. C. W. Batson, who said it was one of the best years the club had experienced. There was a large attendance at the meeting and several other speakers referred to the success the club had enjoyed during the past 12 months. Mr. Batson was reelected president unopposed, while Mr. S. E. Grant was elected vice-president. For the five seats on the committee there were eight nominations and the election will take place next Thursday at the club between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The candidates are Messrs. V/. H. Humphreys, W. F. Kennedy, T. A. Haisman, E. A. Beer, T. W. Lighten, T. P. Hogan, J. E. Mercer and T. McLatchie. The annual “smoko” will take place next Thursday after the result of the poll has been announced.
