SCHOOL COMMITTEE GOOD SWIMMING SEASON (Hornld CorrospomliMit..) At a meeting of the Kopuawhara School Committee Mr. 11. Taylor occupied the chair. Others present were Messrs. F. Pemberton, lion, secretary, 7. Elliot, D. Peryer, and A. RoM'e. It was decided to support the Opoutama committee in its efforts to ob-
tain dental treatment for the country children. The secretary reported that milk probably would.be supplied to the school children 'soon after the opening of the railway to Waikokopu. Regret was expressed at the news of the departure of Miss M. Mavo, who had done excellent work in the infants’ department of the school during the past 21 years. In his report the head teacher, Mr. G. A. Read, stated that the roll now utood at 59. A very successful swimming season has been experienced, ’here being 22 pupils who obtained distance certificates, four for the mile and one for half a mile. This meant it; per cent of the children in the standards won certificates and the school was awarded a special certifi-
ente for this effort. The Knapp Shield which was won by a life-saving team from the school, had arrived. Five pupils passed the intermediate certificate for life-saving and three the elementary. It was decided to hold a school dance in about four weeks. Farewell Afternoon Mrs. D. S. Thorburn, who is leaving No. 3 Camp shortly, to join her husband in ’Palmerston North, where he went some time ago, was the guest of honour at a farewell afternoon given , by the lady members of the Tennis 1 Club. This function was held at the residence of Mrs. E. W. McEnnis, who, ! on behalf of the members, presentee* I Mrs. Thorburn with a beautiful crystal I vase and serviette ring. Mrs, Thor-
burn suitably replied. A delicious afternoon tea was served. Mrs. Thorburn was an active member of several clubs and organisations while in the camp and her presence will be greaMy missed at these, as well as at social functions at. which she was a regular attend or. Sister Kerr has arrived to take over the position of nurse for the camps of the Kopuawha.ro Valley. Miss L. C. Fleming, Gisborne, has been appointed relieving assistant nl flic school at No. 3 Camp to replace Alias M. Mayo. She will take up her riu'ies on Monday. Miss Mayo, who leaves at the weekend, was fa re welled by the Bible class girls' on Wednesday evening,
Mrs. F. Pemberton, who was assisted by Mrs. Crabbe as hostess. During the evening Miss Rewa Pemberton, on behalf of .the girls, presented Miss Mayo with a beautiful brush, comb and mirror set in appreciation of the good work she had done among the girls. The evening was spent playing games and competitions, while some of the girls rendered harmonica solos. Mr. and Mrs. H. Osborne and family left a i few days ago to take up residence at Paritu (No. 5 Camp).
