INDIAN OCEAN SURVEY
QUEST FOR AIR BASES OPINIONS AT COCOS (Reed. June 12, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 12. A message from Cocos Island states that the flying boat Cuba leaves for Diego Garcia <al 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the continuation of her survey flight over the Indian, Ocean. The Commonwealth correspondent in the plane reports that a ground survey oi Hor.sebi.irgh Island revealed ■a site ;for a splendid natural aerodrome, on which a fair amount oi money must be spent to bring it up to aviation requirements, but. all trie material required for runways was near at hand. Captain P. G. Taylor expressed the opinion that although passengercarrying ocean aircraft of the future will be large flying boats, it was quite possible that mails might be carried by land aircraft cruising at a high speed. Therefore, an aerodrome at Coco* Island was a matter of considerable importance commercially and would toe of great value for air force operations.
