NEW MEASURE

CONTROL BY THE STATE IMPORTED COMMODITIES FRUIT AND VEGETABLES PROCEDURE OUTLINED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Control of imports of fruits, vegetables and certain other product.'; will in future be undertaken by the Internal Marketing Division of the Primary Products Marketing Department, said the Hon. W. Nash. Minister of Marketing, to-day. The goods affected include maize, barley, malt, hops, potatoes, canned pe'as." vegetables, fresh, dried or preserved fruit, juices, citrus fruit, pulps, dried fruits, fresh fruits, fruit .pulp, fruits preserved in juice or syrup, jams, jellied marmalade, preserves, candied peel, drained peel, and lemon and orange rinds, dehydrated or in brine.

'The object of control, said Mr. Nash, is to enable imports to be coordinated more effectively with production in New Zealand. The new procedure will not apply to shipments which may be imported prior to the end of June next under import licenses which have been granted covering imports up to that date. In the meantime, al! applications to import after June 30 should be made to collectors of customs in the ordinary way. Such applications, which should he lodged without delay, will be forwarded to the director of internal marketing for consideration. Holders of licenses already granted to .import after June 30 should also immediately furnish to the director particulars of such licenses, and of any commitments made thereunder as regards purchases overseas or sales in New Zealand.

In order that a register may be compiled as early as possible, those interested in importing tiny of the goods mentioned —including chose who have applied for, or propose to apply for import licenses, and also agents who sell such goods on an indent basis —should notify the director of interna! marketing not later than May 5.

Jt is not proposed in the meantime, concluded Mr. Nash,* to disturb existing arrangements regarding the issue of licenses for shipments of fresh fruit and vegetables .imported on consignment from the South Sea Islands and shipments of fresh pineapples imported on consignment from Australia. No license will be required for shipments from the Cook Islands and Western Samoa.
