£20,000 AIRPORT

SCHEME FOR WAIKATO 'APPORTIONMENT OF COST Proposals for acquiring an airport for the Waikato were discussed at a conference of local body representatives in Hamilton. The Mayor, Mr. H. D. Caro, who presided, said the propect had been first raised in July last, when Mr. C. B. Smith, of Hamilton, had offered to sell the Rukuhia aerodrome, an area of 140 acres with hangar and dwellings, at the price it cost him.

Mr. Caro stated that since then the ' Controller of Civil Aviation had' had an inspection of the Waikato made, and had decided that the Rukuhia area was the most suitable site. He recommended that before the area could be finally approved, sufficient ground should be provided to give a runway of 1000 yards in every direction. The total capital outlay needed to purchase the present aerodrome and acquire the additional land was estimated to be not more than £20,000. It was decided that a committee should be appointed to ascertain the cost, and to recommend an apportionment for consideration by the local bodies concerned.
