HOPES REMOTE

RECAPTURE OF CANTON

EFFORTS BY CHINESE

BITTER FIGHTING WAGED

NEW INVASION FEARED

(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assu.) (Reed. April 21, 2.50 p.m.) LONDON, April 20.

The Hong Kong correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, says that the Chinese hopes of recapturing Canton are considered remote. Both sides are bringing up reinforcements and bitter fighting is raging, particularly round Tsengshing.

The Chinese drive in the Honan province has apparently been brought to a standstill with the Japanese recapture of Chungmu, south of Kaifeng and the repulse of the Chinese attack on Siangyahg in the Hupeh province.

Tenshn has suddenly developed on the coast of Fukien, where the Chinese fear an invasion of Foochow in view of the massing of Japanese warships and transports at the mouth of the Min River.

A Tokio message states that Hangkow, Wuchang and Hanyang have been constituted Japanese controlled municipalities. Japan hopes to organise a new administration to govern the provinces of Hunan, Kiangsi, and Hupeh.
