HOCKEY UMPIRES
THE ANNUAL MEETING HEAVY SEASON AHEAD The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Hockey Umpires' Association was held last night, when it was pointed out that a heavy season was ahead for the umpires, in view of the record number of teams nominated for the club competitions. There was a fair attendance of members. Reviewing the activities of the past season, the president, Mr. P. Sim, congratulated the association on the good work it had done. He also paid a tribute to the aole assistance given toy the Poverty Bay Hockey Association at all times. Mr. J. Henderson, supporting Mr. Sim's remarks, thanked all the members for their help in making the season a most successful one. Mr. R. J. Surgenor, in particular, had given valuable aid, conducting several lectures throughout the -season. He also congratulated Mr. I'. Tuhoe in gaining a pass in the •theory examination set by the New Zeakmd Hockey 'Umpires' Association.
Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. P. Sim (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs. H. A. Armstrong, W. • P. Tamihana and V. B. Murray (re-elected), and Mr. E. Fi'.zmaunce; secretary and treasurer, Mr I. M. Douglas (re-elected); delegate to the Poverty Bay Hockey Association, Mr. R. J. Surgenor. Referring to the amended rules, Mr. Surgenor said they would tend to make the game much faster and more open. He suggested that before the season commenced a general meeting should be held and the amended rules thoroughly explained. This met with approval, and it was decided to call .a general meeting of all hockey players next week, further particulars to be advertised on Monday The services of (Three new umpires who had come to the district recently had been offered, these being Mr. L. W. Scott, a former Canterbury representative and umpire, Mr. Lee, formerly of Taranaki' and Mr. S. McLoughlan, recently of Wairoa. It was pointed out that all availabble umpires would be required this season, in view of the large number of teams.
The meeting agreed on periodical blackboard lectures for the benefit of players, and the hope was expressed that players would avail .themselves of the opportunity offered Khem of improving their knowledge of the game. Mr. Surgenor offered to give the lectures. The association decided to hold weekly meetings.
