Derby Street

Sir,—ln Monday's issue, "Pothole" draws attention to the state of Derby street. 'He forgot to mention that tar-scaling has been carried out on far less important streets than Derby street. For instance, Lowe street, from Childers road to past the Gisborne Club, Aberdeen road from Roebuck road to the Botanical 'Gardens, .and 1a host of other strips too numerous to mention.

''Pothole .also lorgot to mention that cycle traffic that would normally ■use Derby street on their way to and from Whataupoko are forced by the conditions existing to make their way j via Peel street bridge, thus causing a concentration on that route at rush periods such as the lunch hour, etc. j The condition of the roadway at present is certainly appalling. I saw a large case bumped Off a lorry recently, and the lorry was not travelling last either. It seems « farce that we should have a bridge with provision for cycle traffic connecting Whataupoko with town, and then discourage cyclists from using it by allowing such a short length of roadway to remain unsealed. ANOTHER POTHOLE.
