BOXING PROMOTION

THURSDAY’S TOURNEY AMATEUR BOUTS LISTED The amateur programme for Thursday night's tournament, promoted by the Gisborne Boxing Association, will have an unusual amount of interest for patrons of the sport, several of those appearing in the preliminaries to the Collins-Kelly professional match having district ranking as champions.

The meeting of G. Reid, Whangara. and P. Wood, Gisborne, in the lightheavvweight bout should be especially ‘ interesting. Both performed well last season at the national championships, and they have been training keenly for better things this year. E. Loibl, Samoa, is a champion in his own island group, and his appearance against N. Jones, Manawatu. promises a good, hard fight, while L. Parsons, another Manawatu man, is to meet W. Shaskey, New Zealand featherweight champion. The full list of amateur bouts is as under: Lightweight— J. Blane, Gisborne, v. G. Taylor. Gisborne; N. Jones, Manawatu. v. E. Loibl, Samoa.

Middleweight.-—R. Hadwen. Gisborne. v. P. Hunt, Gisborne. Light-heavyweight.—P. Wood, Gisborne. v. G. Reid, Whangara. Featherweight. —W. Shaskey, Gisborne, v. L. Parsons, Manawatu; E. Underwood, Auckland, v. T, Baty, Pa tula hi. Visitors to Gisborne for this week’s tournament will include Jack Davis, the Hastings professional welterweight, and his brother Rex, who met W. Shaskey in the final of the featherweight class at the national championships. It is probable that Jack Davis will be matched with the winner of the Kelly-Collins fight. Amateurs engaged on Thursday are training at the Physical Fitness Club’s gymnasium in Nisbett road, and the committee has offered an invitation to the public to view their work-outs. The professional fighters, Collins and Kelly, are expected to arrive at Gisborne to-night, and may give sparring exhibitions .at the club’s rooms.
