END OF WAR
A report from Gibraltar says that troops and artillery from the interior are garrisoning the districts surrounding Gibraltar. It is understood that the Spanish Nationalists intend to fortify Sierra Carbonera, opposite the Rock. These districts were almost unfortified and weakly garrisoned by the Nationalists after the removal of howitzers to the mainland.
CLAIM IN SPAIN FRANCO’S FORCES SUCCESS ON ALL FRONTS SURRENDER OF VALENCIA BOMBING OF GANDIA GIBRALTAR PRECAUTIONS (Elnc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. March 30, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 29. Lisbon reports that a Burgos racho announced at 2.20 p.m. local time today that the civil war in Spain had ended. Lisbon also reported an Almeria radio message announcing that the city had fallen and Nationalists to-day occupied the town. A Valencia radio message announced that the Falangists occupied Valencia at 1 p.m. Many people frantically prepared to leave throughout the night. Fascist cars suddenly appeared in the streets. Crowds in the main square waved Nationalist flags. The British United Press correspondent at. Valencia says that the Republican leader, General Casado, ordered the surrender of Valencia. General Miaja, General Casado and other Republican leaders are reported to have gone to Gandia or Alicante. Cartagena Fighting Fighting is reported in the streets of Cartagena.
The Nationalists are reported to have taken Jaen, Guadalajara, Cuenca and Ciudad Real, where they freed the prisoners. There was practically no bloodshed. The advance continued to-day in all parts A Berlin message quoted a German agency dispatch from Burgos stating that the whole of Spain is now in the hands of General Franco and that all the provincial capitals have declared for the Nationalists. General Franco’s troops are reported to be pushing on from Madrid and elsewhere and to be meeting with no resistance. The British United Press correspondent at Madrid says that the Nationalists seized the towns of Cuenca and Ciudad Real, including the radio stations from which appeals were broadcast for the Nationalists to enter. /
Nationalist planes bombed the British port of Gandia, doing heavy damage although there were no casualties.
