Mr. H. F. Ayson, Resident Commissioner and Chief Judge Of the Cook Islands, who has been on a business and health trip to New Zealand, left for Rarotonga by the Matua this week. Two young residents of Naseby nave left to start a new life in New Guinea. They are Mr. Gerald George, aged 20, and a younger sister, Etta, whose father is a well-known miner in the Naseby district, as was his father before him. Miss George is to marry Mr. Frank Brown, Opoho, who has been engaged in mining in New Guinea for two years, and Mr. George also will follow the same occupation. Mr. A. C. Paine, who has relinquished the post of lion, treasurer of the Gisborne Rowing Club owing to his transfer to Wellington, was tendered a complimentary social at the clubhouse last evening, and was presented with a handsome travelling case as a memento of his long and valued association with the club. Mr. A. F. Allen, club captain, made the presentation on behalf of the gathering, and referred to the loss which Mr. Paine’s transfer would mean to those who had been associated with him in active rowing and in the social functions sponsored by the club. Messrs. L. Winstanley, deputycaptain, T. Bright and 11. Wall also spoke, complimenting Mr. Paine on his record as an oarsman and as an officer, and expressing the best wishes for his continued success in sport and in business. The departing officer referred warmly to his own obligations to the club and its members, and said that he regretted keenly the necessity for severing the association.
