BOXING TROPHIES
AISLABIE MEMORIALS PAST YEARS’ WINNERS Presentations of the B. H. Aislabie Memorial trophies won during the past two years were made to the winners, D’Arcy Heeney and Bill Shaskey, at a gathering in the Gisborne Physical Fitness Club’s rooms last night. The occasion was a gathering to farewell the Gisborne Boxing Association's president, Mr. A. S. Parker, who is leaving at the end of the week for Dannevirke, and nine no-decision bouts occupied part of the evening. Mr. G. H. Sceats, secretary of the Gisborne Boxing Association, said it had been decided to hold the function in the club rooms so that the members would be able to see for themselves where the training took place. The club was indebted to D’Arcy Heeney and Bill Shaskey for conducting the training. Mr. Parker said that the trophies were those which had been set aside to perpetuate the memory of the work of the former president of the association, the late Mr. B. H. Aislabie. D’Arcy Heeney was the winner of the 1937 trophy, but when this was made available the winner was in Australia. Heeney was the amateur welter champion of New Zealand, and a good clean boxer. The 1938 winner was Bill Shaskey, who had fought at the last New Zealand championships at a time when he was ofi'-colour with a severe cold, and, despite that, had put up some sterling contests, winning his championship. Mr. R. Aislabie, son of the late Mr. B. H. Aislabie, presented the trophies. All the bouts staged were of two rounds except that between Tom Baty and D’Arcy Heeney, which was of three rounds. No decisions were announced. The following took part:— Gcorgie Thomson v. Neil Harris; Stan O'Connor v. Barry Marshall; Peter Shone v. Laurie Parker; C. Scanlon v. E. Quinn; P. Shandley v. J. Quinn; M. Donovan v. P. Aylward; J. Blair v. R. Taylor; Tom Baty v. D’Arcy Heeney; .Toe Shaskey v. Bill Shaskey.
