Victoria League Members of the Victoria League of Poverty Bay are looking forward to an interesting and enjoyable meeting next Monday afternoon, when they will accept the invitation of a member of he league, Mrs. T. Uttmg, to hold the April meeting at her home in Haronga oad, and to combine it with a social gathering there and so enjoy her hospitality. At the meeting many interesting objects will be brought up for discussion, including the question of the Victoria League associating itself in ;omc way with the Red Cross Society After the business has been dispatched the gathering will take the form of a garden party, provided the .veather is favourable, and a very pleasant afternoon should be spent ir.

Farewell Party On Tuesday evening Mrs. F. Tolerton gave a delightful cocktail party at her home in Bulwer road in honour of Mrs. A. S. Parker, who leaves Gisborne shortly to take up residence in Dannevirke. Mi's. Tolerton received her guests wearing a charming frock of navy blue georgette. The guest of honour wore a -navy frock with touches of white. Dance at Ruakituri A most successful dance was held on Saturday night by. the Ruakituri Enterprise Club, in conjunction with the Ruakituri Women’s Institute, ir, the Wiakatea woolshed. which had been effectively decorated for the occasion Bat> Bros.’ orchestra provided the music. Ice creams and soft drink: were available, and the members o' the Ruakituri Women’s Institute provided the supper. During an interval Mr. 11. Lane, on behalf of the Enterprise Club, thanked Mr. D. Evans for the use of the shed. Mr. D. Thornton_ was a capable M.C. Mrs. A. Morice and Mr. R. Spence were the winners of a spot waltz. Party for Bride-elect Mesdames Slade and Stanbridge were hostesses at a very enjoyable party given in the Salvation Army Young People's Hall on Tuesday evening in honour of Miss May Cutts, who •is to be married to Mr. J. • A very enjoyable afternoon was spent on the Park Golf Club’s links on Saturday when the club opened the season with a Canadian foursome match. The weather was perfect and there was a large attendance of members.

Many improvements to the property ,vere noted, these including a concreted foreground to the clubhouse and a nine-hole .putting green nearby, ,vhile the links were lound to be in excellent order.

The guests were entertained with two interesting competitions, the winners of which were Mrs. B. Prentice and Mr. S. Budgen, each of whom received a dainty prize. After a delicious supper had been served, the guest of honour was given a number of gift parcels, these being opened by her bridesmaid-elect. Miss B Cutts. All manner of attractive provisions for her future home Avert revealed a.nd Miss Cutts thanked hei friends for their useful gifts. United Cricket Club Dance There was a very large attendance at the United Cricket Club’s dance, which was held in the Oddfellows I Hall, Mangapapa, on Monday night, the function being one of a series ot weekly dances organised by the ciuo to raise funds during the winter season. i This week’s dance was even more I successful and enjoyable than those 1 of the series which have been held I already, its success auguring well for | the future welfare of the club and I being most gratifying to the pro--1 moters. I The dance music was provided by | Mr. A. Pilkington’s dance band, and much-appreciated extras were played - by Miss G. Gooch, piano, and Mr. H. Patterson, piano accordion, during the supper interval. Mr. McLeod capably carried out the duties of M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss D. Eves and Mr. W. Plowman. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. McLeod, Mr. and Mrs. RatclifTe; Mesdames Elston, Plowman, Hick, G. Pine and Priday. Misses Plowman (4), Stevens, Thomson, Poulglase, Denton, Dearness, Malone, Bougen, Isabeth, Holter, Birrell (2), Hunt, Scott, Taylor, Rohan, P. and L. Stevens, Elston, Bullenl Isaacson, and Knight. Messrs. Glassford, McLeod, Walsh. Harris, Quinn, Owen, Plowman (2). Campbell, Hollis, Hannah, Holtham, J. and A. Wallace, G. Hookham, Chambers, Allen, Naylor, Watson Gooch (2), Schultz, Hepburn, Normanton, Clayton, Nicol, Cameron Moleta, Tombleson (2), Watson, Robertson, Milligan, Pickett and Hansen

The new amenities on the grounds and the good condition of the greens and fairways were due to the efforts :>f some of’ the male members of the club in organising working bees hroughout the summer months and

.bus carrying out the improvements. After the Canadian foursome match tie official opening of the club for the :eason took place. The patron, Mr. H. H. DeCosta, in a suitable speech, declared the club open for 1939, and he ladv president, Mrs. W. A. Hall, drove the first ball of the season. A few words appropriate to the occasion were spoken by the club president, Mr. T. A. N. Corson.

After the opening ceremony the members and visitors present adjourned to the reception room for afternoon tea, Which had been prepared by lady members. The recep;ion room was gaily decorated with Hags and the tea ' tables were effectively adorned with the club colours, maroon, carried out with dahlias, daisies and geraniums in that colour, prettily arranged in both crystal and maroon pottery vases.

The ladies’ lounge looked attractive

vith artistically arranged bowls of bella-donna lilies and vases of gold and lemon marigolds. Mr. and Mrs. P. Tureia were successful in winning the Canadian foursome match, in which Miss McGee and Mr. Tennant were the runners-up. Among those-present were Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Bayliss, Mr. and Mrs. F. Maxwell, Ensor. B. Collett and J. Wells. Miss G. Wheeler, Gisborne, is spending a few days in Auckland as the guest of Mrs. C. Scott, Rcmuora. Of interest to Gisborne ladies is the arrival from Auckland on a brief visit of Miss. Delys Brand, who is the personal beauty consultant from the Bond street, London, salon of Jane Seymour. Her visit will provide an opportunity many Gisborne ladies will appreciate.
