BRISK DEMAND
AUCKLAND WOOL SALE LATE RATES HOLD LETTER CLASS SORTS LOWER AVERAGE LIKELY (TVr Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Auckland opened its third wool sale of the season to-day with a catalogue of more than 30,000 bales, setting a new record, before a bench of over 60 buyers. Bidding started briskly. Competition was exceptionally keen for better classes of wool, but bidding was irregular for shabby sorts. 'Compared with the second sale in February values appeared to be up about a halfpenny and were much on a par with those at Wellington last week. However, it is impossible to make an exact comparison as much of to-day’s offerings were inferior in condilion. a quantity being discoloured, a good deal tender and many lots carried more seed than usual. Taking all factors into consideration, the sale opened well. The first catalogue of 659 lots, comprising 7740 bales, was sold in an hour and there was only a handful of passings. For fine crossbreds, average sorts brought 9d to lOd and inferior 7Ad to 81 d. Average crossbred made 81d to 9d and Inferior 7Jd to B',d. Lambs, fine, realised 9d to IOJd, medium B:\d to 9'.d, seedy 4Jd to 6id. Bellies and pieces, good to super, made 7d to 8d; low, 5d to 61d. Crutchings, medium to good, sold at 6id to 71d. As the isalc proceeded, the preliminary trend was confirmed, although bidding seemed to be somewhat sticky for inferior grades. The second catalogue comprising 1035 lots, containing 9248 bales, was completed shortly after 11.30 a.m. and of this about 5 per cent was passed as unsold and it now seems that the average for the sale may not reach that of January, namely, BJd per ib., as to-day’s offering includes a big percentage of lambs’ wool, much of which is seedy, as well as bellies and pieces, and this will bring down the general level.
