FRANCO’S SCORN
TERMS TO MADRID SURRENDER DEMANDED BRIEF RESPITE ALLOWED THREAT OF BOMBING CORDOBA OFFENSIVE (Elp.r. TfJ. Copyright.— United Press Assn.) (Reed. March 27. 10 a.m.) LONDON, March 26. The Burgos correspondent of the Roman paper Messageros states that the Madrid envoys carried a note offering the surrender of the city by the Republicans and outlining terms at which General Franco did not look, but flung aside contemptuously.
II is said that he. stated he wouid not consider any terms, but demanded an unconditional surrender- within 18
hours. If that were; acceptable a further 48 hours would be given in which to hand over all arms. If this were refused he would bomb the city on a large scale: •
The envoys returned to Madrid, where a meeting of the Defence Council was held.
A communique issued at Burgos states that the Nationalists opened an offensive cn the Cordoba front, immediately breaking the Republican lines and advancing to a great depth. General Franco is not relaxing his preparations against Madrid and an assault is expected at any moment.
The St. Jean de Luz correspondent of the Daily Mail states that denials from Burgos concerning steps to occupy Madrid are believed to have been issued merely, because the Nationalists, for reasons which are undisclosed. do not wish the news to be known yet. It was expected that the main army would march in at 7 o’clock yesterday morning.
Burgos reports that France has handed over to General Franco 11 Republican warships which are interned at Bizerta.
A message from Gibraltar states that Jose Luis Diaz has been'handed over to General Franco’s administration.
