Mrs. M. A. Teal,- Carterton,, celebrated her ninety-first birthday on Saturday. Mrs. Teal is hale and hearty and can still do her household duties. An Empire record as a Speaker has been created by Sir Walter Carncro.ss, who will retire on July 10 from the Speakership of the Legislative Council of New Zealand. Commander D. M. Fell, Rotorua, who has resided in New Zealand for the past 13 years, left Wellington by the Mataroa for London, accompanied by Mrs. Fell and their son. They intend to make their borne in England. During the leave of absence of six months granted by the Gisborne Harbour Board to-day to Mr. H. A. Barton, secretary-manager, on account of illness, his duties, will be carried on by Mr. R. R. Baldrey, who has been appointed acting-secretary-manager. Chief Judge R. N. Jones, and Judge J. Harvey, of the Native Land Court bench, returned to Gisborne on Saturday from Ruatoria, where they presided at a sitting of the Appellate Court during the week. The Chief judge will remain in Gisborne for a few days. Judge Harvey left on Saturday afternoon for Napier. Illness has taken heavy toll of the personnel and staff of the Gisborne Harbour Board in recent months. The death of Mr. J. Tombleson, who for 13 years had been chairman of the board, resulted from the first in a series of illnesses. Later Captain A. Carson, harbour-master, was granted special leave, when he entered hospital in Auckland during his regular furlough; and Mr. H. A. Barton, sec-retary-manager, was at the same time granted leave due to illness which necessitated his entering hospital in Gisborne. At to-day’s meeting of the board, the chairman, Mr. A. J. Nicol, reported that Captain Carson had resumed his duties, but that Mr. Barton was not yet well enough to return to work, and he recommended that the secretary-manager be given further special leave of six months. He also mentioned that Mr. W. G. Sher- „ ratt, a Cook County representative on the board, had undergone an I operation in an Auckland hospital, j and had desired leave of absence from i this meeting.
