CHAMPION 21 YEARS
F. J, JEUNE’S RECORD BARRY TROPHY WINNER DEFENCE CLUB’S SEASON REPRESENTATIVE SHOT Concluding the final series of shoots for the season, F. J. Jeune, New Zealand representative marksman, on Saturday afternoon confirmed his success for the twenty-first successive year in the Gisborne Defence Rifle Club’s championship aggregate. Last season Jeune went to Sydney as a member of the New Zealand team which competed in the Empire championship. He has been in the top flight o.f Dominion marksmen for the past 10 years at least, and is a former holder of the service championship of New Zealand, which he won at Trentham. Tlic club championship is decided on the scores registered “off the rifle” throughout the season, and during the 1938-39 season Jeune compiled a total of 709 of a maximum possible score of 800. R. Bull was. runner-up to the champion, with 739, and T. Herivel was third with 738. The club record of the Barry Cup holder is probably unique among marksmen throughout the Dominion. There are rifleshots who spend a great deal of their time on club and private ranges, always anxious to improve their form, and devoting time and expense to their hobbies, without achieving success comparable with Jcune’s. The Gisborne club champion takes his opportunities of shooting each week-end, but his work prevents him devoting any time to the sport at other times. His holidays are spent mainly at Trentham, where for many years he has been a consistent performer in the National Rifle Association’s competitions.
