COASTAL TRADE Tlie auxiliary .scow Altaic arrived at Gisborne oil Saturday from Auckland and this 'morning commenced the discharge of her shipment of benzine. She returns later to Auckland. The Pakura discharged Wellington cargo at Gisborne to-day and departed for Napier, Lyttelton and Wellington. She loads at Lyttelton on Thursday and at. Wellington on Friday and Saturday for Napier, Waikokopu, Gisborne and the Coast. The Tctara arrived at Gisborne today from Greymouth to discharge coal. She sails to-morrow for Westport. Owing to rain delaying loading operations at Wellington, the Wainui was not dispatched on Saturday and ,vas expected to leave that port this morning for Gisborne direct. The steamer should arrive here about 1 p.m. to-morrow and on completion of discharge and loading to-morrow night sails for Napier, thence Wellington and South Island ports to load again for Napier and Gisborne. The Pukeko, from Auckland, completes loading at Portland to-day and is expected to reach Gisborne on Wednesday. The Kopara loads at Auckland today and to-morrow for Coast bays, Gisborne and Napier. She is due here on Thursday. The Margaret W. is at Auckland, where she finishes loading to-mcrrow for Tokomaru Bay, Tolaga Bay and Gisborne.
WORLD IDLE TONNAGE It is noted that the records for the year ended. April 1, 1938, show a substantial increase in world idle tonnage. It rose from 2,321,000 gross tons on April 1. 1937, to 3,159,000 on April 1, 1938. At the present time, however, the volume of world idle tonnage is only 22 per cent of what it was on July 1, 1932. at which time approximately 20 per cent of the entire world fleet was laid up. The total United States laid-up fleet on April 1 was 1,-170,000 gross tons.
