WAIROA’S PROGRAMME S ESTIMATED COST OF £000(1 (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. ~ A report and estimate of Ithe- cost of the sealing of the remaining streets, un the borough was furnished by -the engineer, Mr. A. C. Twyford,. at th<£ ■monthly meeting of the Wairoa Borough Council. The Mayor, -Mr: H. L. Harker, stated that ithe total -cost for the boroughls' street sealing programme would' be £OOOO, and -the work would have to be done in two “bites,” of £3OOO each; year. He was of opinion that the opportunity should be taken to put the question before the ratepayers so that; the necessary formation work could be done. The interest on the sinking" fund over a 10-year period would be approximately £7OO a year. The. council should take .authority' for thCf fulil £OOOO -loan, £3OOO for the coming year and another loan of £3OOO for. the second year. L The Mayor then -moved that the motions necessary in making application to the Local Bodies Loan Board; and taking -a poll of ratepayers be passed, flic motion being seconded b£ Cr. J. B. Cook. L “I consider it an economical, thing; to do,” stated Cr. M. J. Gemmell in expressing his favour with the motion.The view that the council was layA ing the -streets with bitumen, but no provision was being made for the people as far -as footpaths were con: cerned was taken by Cr. A. W. Archi—bald. “That is absolutely true in the back streets,” stated Cr. J. O. Scott, wh# added that of the two he would rather see the roads done. It was more economical. “We should not lose sight of the footpaths,” stated Cr. W. H.
