The surprise at the Rosehill race meeting on Saturday was the defeat of Ajax in the Rawson Stakes by Spear Chief, whose victory was most popular. Few bookmakers operated on the race, Ajax being regarded as such a certainty. Heavy showers fell during the meeting. Results: — Three-yeaty old, Handicap, of £200; 7 furlongs.—Creditor, 9.2 (Munro), 1; Adios, 3.9 (McCarten), 2; Mosaic, 9.1 (O’Connor), 3. Twelve started. Won by nail’ a head; two lengths and a half. Time, 1.26|. RAWSON STAKES, Of £650; 9 furlongs. SPEAR CHIEF, 9.0 (McCarten) .. 1 AJAX, 9.0 (Badger) 2 ALLUNGA, 9.2 (Munro) .. ■ ■ 3 The only starters. Ajax immediately took the lead, closely followed by Allunga and Spear Chief. The order was unchanged till inside the distance, when Spear Chief came up quickly to beat Ajax by half a length, with Allunga a length and a quarter away third. Time, 1.52 J. Railway Handicap, of £200; 7 furlongs,—Bramol, 8.1 (O’Connor). 1; Hamurah, 9.0 (McMenamin), 2 ; Gold Rod, 9.4 (McCarten), 3. Seventeen started, including Bengal Lancer. Twelve started. Won by two lengths: half a length. Time, 2.32 J. Parramatta Mile, of £200; 1 mile. Limulet, 8.8 (Munro), 1; Fearless, 7.10 (O’Connor), 2; Duke Caledon, 8.6 (Lappan), 3. Fifteen started, including Country Party and Highborn. Won by a length: a length and a half. Time. 1.40. GLOAMING-DESERT GOLD RECORDS STILL STAND By “Trenton” Prior to Saturday Ajax had 18 consecutive* victories, tire last being in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, one milu. at Flemington, on Saturday, March 11 This made his record 25 wins and three seconds, and his earnings approximately £29,000. His owners were ambitious that he should beat the record of two New Zealand horses Gloaming and Desert Gold—who eacn won 19 races on end. He failed to do it. Next to Gloaming and Desert Gold are Phar Lap, 14 consecutive wins, and Limerick, 13. Phar Lap was New Zealand-bred, while Limerick was bred in the Dominion and owned oy the late Mr. £l. A. Knight, Canterbury, lor whom Fred Jones trained.
