WORLD CONFERENCE CALL

BRITISH LABOUR PLEA CAUSES OF CONFLICT TOTALITARIAN MKNACK (Klnc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Mar. 25. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Mar. 24. The Leader ot the Opposition in the House of Commons, Major C. R. Attlee in a public speech to-day, said there was a widespread agitation to introduce conscription. “It is clear from the statement of the Ministers that they have no plans, in the event of conscription, of utilising the services of the masses,” he continued. “Wc are facing danger from the totalitarian States organised on the basis of refusing individual liberty and regimenting the community. “We will not defeat the menace by adopting their method. We must develop the utmost spirit of voluntary service.” 1-Ie added that the policy of unilateral appeasement had proved not only wrong, but futile and had brough Britain to the danger of war and weakened democracy throughout the world. Major Attlee advocated a world conference to deal with the fundamental causes of war. Major Attlee issued a statement that there was not the slightest basis for a report that Mr. Chamberlain and Lord Halifax were negotiating with Major Attlee and Mr. Greenwood in an effort to broaden the basis of the Government. Labour Party discussions with Mr. Chamberlain were entirely confined to the foreign situation.
