Lost Hub Plates
THE hub plates which conceal the fixing bolts of the road wheels, in the majority of cases are secured in I place by a simple bayonet catch, bul in some cars a central holding screw I is used. While these rarely give I trouble, there have been cases of the plates being lost simply because they generate a flywheel effect, spin in I relation to the wheels to which they I are fitted and unwind the holding J screws. | When this trouble occurs, perhaps j the simplest remedy is to have small I dowel pins fitted in the edges oJ j each wheel hub, and in the edge ol ; each hub plate file a groove to en- j gage with the dowel. By this mean'' j die plate is prevented from turning and there should not be any more j trouble with lost hub plates. The trouble described usually only recurs on the near side of a car, j and is induced by the sudden retarda- : uon of the wheels under braking, j inertia forces tending to make the : plates keep spinning.
