MANAWATU RACES FRIDAY’S PROGRAMME STRONG CUP FIELD BEAUPABTIR FANCIED SINGLE POOL BETTING By “Trenton” The Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting will open at Awapuni on Friday and conclude on Saturday. The single pool system of betting will be in operation. The King George Handicap, the big distance handicap, has drawn a good field of 14 runners, and although the open “six” is a small field, the result appears open. The Awapuni Gold Cup field is exceptionally strong and is sure to attract Dominion-wide attention. ICING GEORGE HANDICAP, Arctic King has failed of late but Queen of Song has recent form. Play On has 81b. more than at Taranaki, but should again go well. Siegmund failed badly-at Trentham. Big Dook has shown his best up to nine furlongs and The Crooner may need a race. The Bigot finished fifth in the Thompson at Trentham after being with the leaders most of the way. Corroboree, Hunting Cat and Old Surrey all have fair chances, but on recent performances Dainty Sue should be capable of holding them safely. Fancies may include;— PLAY ON, DAINTY SUE, THE BIGOT. THE OPEN SPRINT Florence Mills’ performance at Trentham was outstanding, even allowing for Suleiman’s running out in the straight, and that should ensure her solid support. Laughing Lass ran a great race in the Thompson and appeared unlucky to be beaten. Rakahanga was not sighted at Trentham, but Top Row finished solidly on opening day and just failed to take second money from Suleiman. Race Call ran two good races at Taranaki and should account for the remainder. The public may favour: — LAUGHING LASS, FLORENCE MILLS, TOP ROW. minor events The following may be supported in the remaining races: — Karerc Hurdles: Hanover, Red Refus. . ~ ~ Autumn Plate: Cuisinier, Little Dorrit, Snigger. TRACK AND STABLE BEAUPARTIR’S RIDER TAURANG A INTER ESTS CHANCE FCR RED RUFUS By “Trenton” H. N. Wiggins has been engaged to ride Beaupartir in the Awapuni Gold Cup. Wiggins’ Programme After riding at Manawatu on Friday 11. N. Wiggins will journey to Tauranga to ride at the Bay of Plenty fixture. Change of Stables The three-year-oid Tahiti, who was formerly trained at Paeroa, has joined F. Smith’s stable at Takanini. Tahiti, who is by Lord Quex —Peg o’ My Heart, has shown pace and is likely to improve. For Tauranga After racing at Paeroa, the Ellerslie horses Spinning Wheel and Ohmaha went on to Tauranga, which they are to fulfil engagements at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s meeting next Saturday and Monday. Both horses have been racing well but unluckily, and are due to give their trainer, W. J. Fergus, a turn of success. Red Rulus Well In his last start, on the fiat, Red Rufus went down narrowly to Mesurina, but as he won in his last start over hurdles, his chance at Awapuni in the jumping race is a good one His weight is well within his compass, especially in the class he will be called on to meet. Destined for Hurdling War Lap has gone on the right way since being placed twice at Wanganui, but will not be raced while tne tracks are as hard as at present. After the Easter meetings War Lap may be schooled over the battens and he should develop into a capable jumper.
