SCARCITY OF SHEARERS
INCREASINGLY ACUTE SHORTSIGHTED POLICY A short-sighted policy is blamed by Mr. C. 11. Williams, president of the Poverty Bay and East Coast Sheepowners’ Union, for the increasing difficulty in securing competent shearers. He makes this comment in the report to be presented to the union's annual meeting to be held on March 31. "The difficulty is partly due to the attraction of the more permanent public works employment and partly to the short-sighted policy of farmers themselves in failing to instruct learn ers.” the report states. "We have recommended in the proper quarter that the clause in the award which provided for one learner to every live shearers should be more rigidly enforced, especially in the case of contract shearing gangs. "In their own interests sheepowners would do well to make every effort to secure learners in their sheds; otherwise. with the gradual reduction in'the number of older men. the position must become increasingly acute.” ■
