NEWS OF THE DAY

Country Bakers’ Costs The increased costs facing country bakers and especially the higher cost of flour were discussed at the annual meeting of the Whangarci Master Bakers’ Association. It was resolved to write to the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, and also to the Wheat Committee, pointing out that housewives and country home cookeries could buy flour cheaper from their local grocer than could country bakers from the Wheat Committee. Frenchmen Unite Much political dissension was rife in Lorraine, remarked the Rev. Father Joseph Nicolas, Fiji, on his arrival at Auckland on Monday after a visit to France. People were bitter in their opposite views, but evidence was given last September, during the ; previous European crisis, as to what j extent these would be allowed to afreet national interests. As soon as the war clouds began to gather, the people came together as one, until the danger was past. Golf Handicaps “You are a keen golfer, with a handicap of four?” said counsel to a witness in the Auckland Supreme Court, and added, “Indeed, you could not have a handicap of four unless you were keen and spent a good deal of time on it.” “I think I can take judicial notice of that,” said Mr. Justice Callan solemnly. “In fact, I would go further and say that a large number of people could never get near a four handicap, even if they played golf all day.” Old Horse’s Record The 26-year-old gelding, Two-step, owned and trained by Mrs. Colin Merrin, of Otorohanga, in winning the championship jumpers’ event at the recent Cambridge Show, for the third time, set the seal on his fame as one of the best-performed show ring horses in the country. Two-step has been- jumping in the show rings of the North Island for the past 19 years, and is still going strong. He has now won a cash sum of £1976 and a room full of cups and trophies. 2000 Trees Destroyed A fire which occurred 'on the river accretion area of the Palmerston North Hospital Board’s farm recently did a good deal of damage over an area of 50 to 60 acres, reported the managing-secretary, Mr. A. J. Phillipps, to a meeting of the board. Of 5000 trees which had been planted on the area about 200 C were destroyed, most of them being well-grown trees planted about six years ago. The loss of the trees was very serious, said Mr. Phillipps, and they would have to be replaced during the coming winter.

Feeling Against Noise Evidence of a growing feeling that steps should be taken to bring about a reduction in the amount of noise caused by motor vehicles was given by Mr. A. F. T. Chorlton, publicity officer of the Transport Department at a meeting of motor-cyclists in Auckland. Recently the department asked local bodies for their views on the best means of promoting safety on the roads, he said. Although the department had not invited views on the question of noise, nearly every local body, of its own violitfon, had recommended decisive actifin that would result in a reduction in road noises and had emphasised the need for insisting on the fitting of efficient silencers on all motor vehicles.
