MADRID APPEAL
PEACE NEGOTIATIONS RADIO CALL TO FRANCu COURT MARTIAL SENTENCE LEADERS OF RED REVOLT (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Rec. Mar. 20, 12 noon. LONDON, March 19. A message from Madrid states that the Spanish Republican Foreign Minister, Senor Besteiro, has appealed to the Nationalist leader, General Franco, by wireless to open peace negotiations, A court martial in Madrid sentenced to death Colonels Luis Barcelo and Emilio Buenos, leaders of the Communist revolt against the new Defence Council. The supreme military tribunal confirmed the sentence on Colonel Barcelo, but did not confirm the sentence on Colonel Buenos. A Burgos message states that the Republican prisoners taken up to the end of the Catalan offensive totalled 431,351 of whom 253,346 have been released. The Spanish Nationalist Minister of the Interior, Senor Nuner, said that the Nationalists were not heeding Madrid's peace appeal, desiring a victorious end to the war.
