HASTINGS BURGLARIES
! BUT CHER' S SHOP ROBBED SUM OF £45 MISSING OTHKR ATTEMPTS FAIL (Per Tress Association.) HASTINGS, this day. The fact that staff members were still working in adjacent offices did not deter an audacious attempt at theft by two young men who entered the office of the Daily. Mail at Hastings early on Saturday morning and ransacked the main office in an unsuccessful search for the keys of the strongroom. An attempt to open the strongroom failed. Members of the staff, hearing a noise, disturbed the intruders, who escaped. They later were detected observing the office from a distance and were chased by two employees on a motor cycle, but they vanished. On the same morning an actual burglary occurred bearing similar features. The thieves gained entry to a butcher's shop in Hastings and searched the office for the keys of the safe, which were found. The safe was opened and £45 was stolen. A third attempt was made last night at a shop in Hastings. An.entry was effected, but nothing of value was removed. The police are maintaining a close watch, as these attempts are the climax to a series of thefts extending over several weeks.
