TAIRAWHITI PIG COUNCIL

PROGRESS OF CLUBS REPORT BY SUPERVISOR A meeting of the Tairawhiti District Pig Council was held in the office of the secretary, Mr. G. H. Sceats, on Friday, when there were present Messrs. H. R. Chrisp, chairman, W. A. McCliskie, F. R. Bould, L. C. Wagner, L. T. Hughes, J. Guthrie, G. R. Sefton, G. Brown, T. French, J. E. Ormundsen, J. M. Taylor, the supervisor, Mr. H. A. Hopkins, and the secretary, Mr. G. H. Sceats. Mr. H. M. Peirson, pig extension officer, advised that lie intended visiting the district from April 24 to 28, when he would show a film on pig management in various centres. The meeting noted that Anzac Day was included in the proposed dates, and decided to point this out to Mr. Peirson, asking him to extend his stay in the district to make up for the" day which would be lost on Anzac Day. It was pointed out that the council's financial year would end on March 31, and it was decided to hold the annual meeting on April 14. An invitation was extended by Mr. G. Brown to the supervisor to attend a Held day at Puna in connection with the calf club and also to attend meetings of the young farmers" clubs in the district. Inspection of Clubs The supervisor, Mr. H. A. Hopkins, submitted his first report for the period from February 13 to March 17, during which time he visited the whole of the district in which clubs had been formed. He received considerable assistance from Messrs. J. M. Taylor and A. West in the Wairoa and Nuhaka areas respectively. The Nuhaka and Kahungungu clubs compared favourably with any under the council's jurisdiction, and the Whakaki club should prove a valuable asset to the native members. While he was on the Coast, Mr. Hopkins found the Ruatoria club doing remarkably well, and its custodian, Mr. A. Wilson, was complimented on the way in which he had carried out his duties. Continuing further north, he found the clubs in a very healthy state and a credit to all concerned. The pig recording officer, Mr. T. French, and Mr. J. E. Ormundsen were thanked for the assistance given. Last week, Mr. Hopkins visited the clubs in the Poverty Bay area, and congratulated the custodian of Te Arai club, Mr. A. Buckley, on the manner in which he had cared for the club's sow, the litter from which averaged 4G.81b. at eight weeks for nine pigs. "With regard to the Gisborne club," the supervisor added, "it can be pointed out that this was actually a foundation club, and now that the movement has made headway its purpose, I feel, has been served. My reasons for this statement are that the members of the Gisborne club are scattered, and to service them would require a great deal of time, also, the majority, if not all of its members, belong to another club in their own district. "Several members have expressed a wish to see a Large White club established, and I think if sufficient members could be" enrolled, such a club would provide this want, and at the same time serve as a comparison with other clubs of different breeds in the district."
