A Berlin message states that the Ruthenians are reported to have started a counter offensive against the Hungarians. An unconfirmed report received in Berlin states that Ruthenia sent a telegram to all the signatories to the Munich Agreement for help and a guarantee of independence. A Warsaw message reported day that the Hungarians were approaching Chust. Fourteen Czechs were killed and 40 wounded in an encounter with Hungarians near Svnlva. A Bucharest message isays that the Rumanian Government received a communication from M. Volosin’s Government of Ruthenia proposing that the whole of Ruthenia be incorporated in Rumania. Diplomatic officials state that Rumania would not entertain the idea. Bucharest reports that the Humanian-Ruthenian frontier is being dosed against refugees. Bucharest also reports the arrival on the border of over 5000 Czech infantry, three artillery batteries, three armoured car sections and two aero planes. All were disarmed. Estimates of the dead in the Chust fighting vary from 120 to 400. A man, lelieved to be a Czech officer, unsuccessfully made an attempt on the life of M. Volosin, the Ruthenian Prime Minister. A Budapest message says it was announced in the Chamber of Deputies to-day that the complete autonomy of the Carpatho-Ukraine had been declared. The Carpatho-Ukrainians had twice asked for help and immediate occupation of the whole territory, which the Hungarian forces were now carrying out. The Hungarian frontiers on the Carpathians would be restored. The Hungarian Foreign Minister announced that “in response to an appeal from the Ruthenian people,\ Hungary had decided to take over the whole of Ruthenian territory.” The army was sufficiently strong to crush any resistance. The occupation would not impair the interests of neighbours.
