MADRID EFFORTS OVERTURES TO FRANCO INDEPENDENCE OF NATION RAN ON REPRISALS FIGHTING IN SUBURBS (Elec. Tol. Copyright—United Pross Assn.) (Reed. March 15. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, March 14. A report from Madrid states that the 'Republican Minister of Defence, General Casado, has announced he ;s trying to initiate peace negotiations with the Nationalists on the basis of the independence of Spain and no reprisals. An Independent Cable Service message from Madrid states that although the Republican Defence Council apparently has full control of the city, the Communists last night were holding the outer suburbs, where heavy fighting was reported at midnight. Many of the tanks of the Defence Council’s forces were trapped in pits and then set on fire with bottles of petrol, the crews being burned io death. After the expulsion of the Communists from the former home in Madrid of the millionaire, Senor Juan March, the police discovered a hoard of art treasures, jewellery and money, believed to be the proceeds of confiscations carried out by the Communists early in the war. All are being handed over to the Republican Defence Council.
