REMOVAL OF ROAD SIGNS

INCIDENT IN GISBORNE PROTEST TO DEPARTMENT A decision to protest against the action of an inspector of the Transport Department, who was alleged to have ordered a patrol officer of the Automobile Association (Auckland) to remove signs from the roadside near Gisborne, was reached at a recent meeting of the council of the association. A report from the patrol officer concerned stated that, on the occasion of the race meeting at Gisborne last month, he prepared and erected signs to assist in controlling the traffic. Certain Ugns were erected on part of the road under the control of the Main Highways Board and an inspector of the department ordered their removal. The chief patrol officer, Mr. J. Hibbert, reported that the signs, which were of the usual courtesy character, had been approved by the association’s touring manager, Mr. R E. Champtaloup. The president, Mr. F. G. Farrell, said it was regrettable if the association's patrols and inspectors of the department were to have differences It would be the association’s duty to whilw rnaUcrs - . He questioned whether any inspector had the right to order the removal of any signs approved by the association. §
