STOCK CAUSE DAMAGE
TRAFFIC ON WET ROADS UAWA ENGINEER’S REPORT (Herald Correspond(*n t.) ’’Stock travelling in wet weather on newly-prepared road’ surfaces have caused considerable damage during llie past day or two," reported the county engineer to the March meeting of the Uawa County Council. "Arakiki Riding.—Most of the roads are in fair order, although Kiore is in need of a good deal of attention The Arakihi road has been widened at several points and two new culverts have been placed. Tenders for the metalling contract closed to-day. “Tauwhareparae Riding.—The contractor has made a start on the dismantling of the old Wigan- bridge, and a suspension foot-bridge is being erected as an emergency measure. “Mangaheia Riding.—The work of blasting a road in the gorge is comoleted, but much remains to be done before this end of the road will be an all-weather one. “Mangatuna Riding.— ' Thc_ roads are in fair order. The new bridge over the Kopuni stream on the Kaiaua road is complete and arrangements have been made to (ill the approaches. “Ordinary maintenance has been carried out in the i-lauiti and Tolaga Bay ridings.” The district engineer, Mr. O. G. Thornton, recently paid a visit to the district, and expressed concern regarding the surfacing of the roads, which were anything but in good order; He expressed the opinion that the most economical method of keeping the roads in good order was by mechanical power. It was suggested that the council should purchase another power grader with bull-dozing and scarifier attachments. ,
