A world speed record for weightcarrying machines, which had never previously been attempted, was established when a Savoia-Marchetti S.M. 75 aeroplane fitted with three Alla Romeo engines covered 2000 kilometres with a load of 10,000 kilogrammes (nearly 10 tons) at an, average speed of 200.8 miles an hour. The death occurred suddenly In Westport the other day of Mr. Frank S. Wood, a native of Christchurch, aged 50. He was a prominent business man, being a member of the Progress League and a former borough councillor. He was a Past Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge.
