£2OO DONATED
GISBORNE CRICKET
half for coaching fund
REST LOU EMERGENCIES
MIL MILLER’S GENEROSITY
A donation of £IOO to form, the nucleus of a coaching fund and a further £IOO to be held in trust in case of an emergency have been made to the Poverty Bay Cricket Association by Mr. W. Barrington Miller, who left during the week-end on his return to London.
At one time an official of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, Mr. Miller has retained an interest in the sport, particularly in regard to its expansion in Gisborne, his . home town, and his offers are typical of the generosity which he has extended to other sports bodies with which he has been associated.
His offer lo provide £2OO in the manner mentioned was made in a letter which was read at, last night's meeting of the association’s management committee, which expressed its sincere thanks to Mr. Miller for his generosity.
Encouraging Young Players
‘•I wish to do something for the game in the district,” Mr. Miller’s letter stated, “and after discussing the matter with several prominent supporters and players in Gisborne I believe that the best interests of the game would be served by establishing a coaching fund. There are many keen young cricketers in Gisborne who undoubtedly would develop into excellent players and be a credit to the district, such as young Carson, if given the opportunity. At present this opportunity is not available to them because of a want of finance.
“Therefore, I propose donating £IOO to form the nucleus of a coaching fund. I realise that to be of any real and lasting help the coaching fund should be made up to approximately £SOO and that is why I suggest my donation should form the nucleus of the fund in the hope that others who feel interested in fostering the game in the district and who can afford if, may ,ioin in helping to augment the fund. In Case of Urgent Need “I also propose donating a further £IOO to be held in trust and to be available to the association in case of urgent need in the future. I do not desire that this fund should form any part of the association’s revenue account and be available for any deficiency in any one year. I therefore suggest that this amount be vested in suitable trustees, who will be empowered to use their discretion to make the amount, or such part thereof. from time to time available to the association on application.”
The association’s management committee last night decided to vest the money in the trustees, members stating that other donations might be attracted now that a nucleus of a coaching fund lias been established.
