FASTING BY GANDHI

CHEERFUL THOUGH WEAK

BRIEF VISIT BY WIFE

(Reed. Mar. 6, 11.30 p.m.)

LONDON, Mar. 5.

Messages from Rajkot concerning the fast by Mahatma Gandhi as a protest against the rejection of his demands for constitutional reform giving the people a voice in the administration of the State, says that yesterday, after one day of the fast, Gandhi was cheerful although weak.

A specialist, after an examination of Gandhi, said he should be most careful not to receive visitors and not to conduct correspondence.

To-day Gandhi was extraordinarily cheerful and was maintaining his strength although he appeared to be thinner. Hindu scriptures were read to him.

Mrs. Gandhi, who is imprisoned seven miles away, was taken to her husband's bedside to-day and then returned to the detention camp.
