Following the news of the death of Pope Pius XI. the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Lang, paid a tribute to the Pope's unwearying efforts for peace. "He was a man of sincere piety and bore his immense burdens with dignity, and courage," said Dr. Lang.

Particular attention is devoted hi London newspaper reviews to the Pope's interest in recent international affairs and his tireless efforts for world peace which he maintained until the end.

King Victor Emmanuel was notified by his master of ceremonies early in the morning concerning the death of the Pope.

Signor Mussolini and the Italian Foreign Minister. Count Ciano, visited the Vatician to pay their last respects to the Pope.

Herr Hitler sent a message of condolence.

Flags were flown at half mast in Rome, Berlin and Paris.

Messages from Sydney state that paying a tribute to the Pope, the apostolic delegate, Dr. Panico, in a broadcast message to-night said that Pius XI recalled the greatest Popes in history in his understanding of diplomatic movements, often very complex, and in his knowledge ol social questions. He recalled that Pope Leo XIII in his tremendous activity and the erection cf monuments. He was like Pope Sixtus V in his ardour and passion while, defending the rights of the church when it was assailed or downtrodden, he made one think of Pope Gregory XII.
