£1,000,000 LOAN PROJECT CHI LDREN'S PLAYGROUND (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. A former Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman E. S. Marks, C.8.E., who arrived by the cruise liner Narkunda to-day, said that the highlight of civic affairs in Sydney was that the city was about to borrow £1,000,000, to be spent at the rate of £IOO.OOO a year for 10 years on improvement works. Another outstanding feature of Sydney activities was the children's playground movement, on which £20,000 a year was being spent. Abo.ut 5000 children were being taught arts and crafts, and also sports and games in the playgrounds, each of which was controlled by two men and two women experts.

"The experts have said that Sydney is in the forefront of the world in this work," added Alderman Marks.
