ELLERSLIE CARD

THIRD DAY'S PROGRAMME

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS GT. NORTHERN DERBY DEFAULTER FAVOURITE By "Trenton" The third day of the Auckland Racing Club's meeting at Ellerslic will open with the Ellerslie Handicap. This race is for apprentice riders and many will make their final selections when the riders are announced. Inquisitor ran a good second on Wednesday and the winner, Miss Appellant, is also engaged. Full Hand will probably have the services o£,.G. W. Smith, son of Full Hand's trainer. Hutana is a solid sort and Gay Mimic, Devon and Haile Boy have all shown flashes of form. Valspear, Ngakaru and Poland are all capable of offering opposition. Decently handled this trio may be in the firing line at the finish:— MISS APPELLANT. FULL HAND, DEVON. New Year Hurdles The New Year Hurdle race is two furlongs further than on the event of Wednesday and this will be in Pyrenees' favour. Chikara, Mio Lume and Rozel should also be suited. Erination has a lot of weight and may find the task too much. En Tour, Celtic Lad, Small Boy and Stanstead are all capable of good efforts, . The ' favourite division may comprise:— PYRENEES, ROZEL, MIO LUME. Midsummer Handicap Thurnavaals and Heroic Maid filled the minor placings behind Beau Repaire on the opening day. Scandal, Sir Lysander and Pern are all speedy customers. In a race where there is plenty of room for a surprise the following may find favour:—THURNAVAALS, HEROIC MAID, PERN. The Big Event Round Up heads a field of 16 in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, the big race of the day, and on his cup showing he should be prominent. Padishah finished fast in the Cup and if he is handy when the straight is reached he should be hard to beat.

Willie Win has yet to show his best as he looks particularly well. Mazir ran a good race on Wednesday and should again be prominent. The Buzzer, Arctic King, Quadroon and Master Brierly have the right credentials and are all possibilities. 'Cheval de Volee won the Cup from end to end and still has a handy weight. Dictate, Knight of Australia, Kelly and Gay Rose are certain to receive a measure of support. In a good betting race in which fancies will be well distributed the bulk of the investments may be entrusted to:—

PADISHAH, MAZIR, CHEVAL DE VOLEE

Gt. Northern Derby

Few will go past Defaulter to find the winner and the second horse should pay the bigger dividend. The order of favouritism may toe: DEFAULTER, OLD BILL, PEERLESS. County Handicap . The Trimmer, Sir Robin, Huntingmore and Blonde Princess all went excellent races on Monday. Melvanui ran fifth in the Fergusson Handicap and is capable of a better effort. White Gold has disappointed at the meeting but cannot be discarded while
