OLD HOMESTEAD RAZED
SOUTH CANTERBURY FIRE OCCUPANTS’ ESCAPE (Per Press Association.) TIMA.RU, this day. A well-known homestead nearly 70 years old, .the Luxmoore homestead .just north of Timaru, was totally destroyed by a spectacular fire in the early hours of this morning. It was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Fahey, but .the former was away on holiday and only Mrs. Fahey was at home with the two 'children and her sister. The noise of the fire awoke Mrs, Fahey soon after 3 a.m. She .immediately called the Timaru Fire Brigade, which left for the scene at once. .By the time the brigade arrived the centre of the roof had fallen in and, fanned 'by a strong wind, the flames soon made the saving of the house itself impossible. It was all the brigade could do to save some ol' the outhouses, and only one dressing table was brought intact out of .the building. Much valuable furniture was lost, but the insurance figures are not available. The house was associated with the early history of South Canterbury, being built on the estate of Mr. P. B. Luxmoore, an early settler from England.
