WELCOMING NEW YEAR
WAIKANAE CARNIVAL BATHING BELLE CONTEST WRESTLING AND GAMES Gaily illuminated by the new lighting system, the Wailcanae Beach promenade and its environs should present an animated scene on Saturday night an the occasion of the New Year’s Eve .carnival being organised by the social committee of the Gisborne Returned 'Soldiers’ Association. A brilliant display of fireworks will be among the features arranged to celebrate the advent of the New Year and among the earlier attractions of -he gala night will be a bathing belle competition in which excellent prizes will -be awarded the successful entrants. 1 Open-air and indoor dancing, wrestling contests and various games of .skill will provide further diversion I for what it is expected will be a big assembly of .merry-makers. Gisborne Wrestling Association ollici'als will conduct three amateur bouts, the contestants in tjae respective bouts being tßlackie Read and George Bell, EI. Duckworth and M. Smale, and George Gcddes and K. Buscke. The opponent chosen for Read is a newcomer to the district, with a Jong experience of the amateur ring. Duckyorth and Smale will be having their first outings since their appearances, it fhe New Zealand amateur championship tournament, and Buscke and Geddes, old rivals, are among the smartest welters ever produced in the district.
