ADVANCE BY REBELS
IMPETUS REDUCED CONSOLIDATING GAINS (Reed. Dec. 29, 2.40 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 28 A communique issued from the headquarters at Burgos of the Spanish Nationalist forces claims that the vigorous advance continues on every sector of the Catalan front, but unofficial sources admit that the initial impetus has been somewhat reduced in the past two days, partly owing to the necessity for consolidating the newlv-occupied territory and partly owing to the Republican counter attacks. The communique states that General Franco’s forces in five days occupied 400 miles of territory. A Republican communique issued at Barcelona admits small territorial gains by General Franco’s forces on the south flank of the Catalan front, but says the attempt to reach the Lerida-Tarragona main road and railway has been withstood. The Republicans state that heavy losses were inflicted on the Nationalists in the Tremp area.
