AUCKLAND WRESTLING
RAY STEELE BEATS JONES TWO FALLS AGAINST ONE (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Ray Steele, holder of the heavyweight wrestling title of New Zealand and Australia, again demonstrated his outstanding ability in Auckland on Monday night, when he won a convincing victory over Paul Jones by two falls to one. The latter did well to take a fall from the champion in the fifth round with his specialty hold, a combination figure-four body scissors, but, when he attempted to repeat the performance in the next round, he was trapped by his versatile opponent. Steele had previously secured a submission fall in the third round. Both wrestlers confined themselves for the most part to straight wrestling, though there were occasional lively exchanger, which called for the referee’s intervention. Jones, weighing 16.4 against his opponent’s 16.0, set the pace in the early rounds, but he did not make much headway against Steele’s brilliant defensive wrestling. The latter exerted himself spasmodically and it was on these occasions that his superiority was apparent. Submission Fall Gained
A step-over forward toehold gave Steele a submission fall in the third round, and he held his advantage till the fifth, when Jones clamped on a figure-four scissors and leg bar and rolling Steele for several minutes, finally brought the champion’s shoulders to the mat.
Intent on following up his advantage, Jones dumped Steele heavily at the start of the sixth and quickly moved to his figure-four body scissors. For a moment Steele seemed in danger of defeat, but he spun quickly, pivoted underneath his opponent and, balancing cleverly, pinned Jones’ shoulders, though the latter still retained his body scissors hold.
