TASMAN AIR BASE
AUCKLAND FACILITIES SLIPWAY AND WORKSHOPS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, said to-day that the Cabinet has approved of the provision of additional base facilities for the trans-Tasman service at Auckland. A building 160 ft. by 40ft. deep with a height of 30ft. is being provided at Hobsonville where the flying-boats will be taken up on a slipway for repair and removal and the replacement of the engines.
A workshop building 120 ft. by 100 ft. is being provided at Mechanic's Bay for repairs to the engines and the airframes and for housing stores. _ A small engine test house is also being built there, and an administration building for booking and meterological officers.
The work is being undertaken by the Edwards Construction Company and a start is expected to be made on January 4. The Auckland Harbour Board is undertaking the provision of the necessary landing stage pontoon and gangways and will also arrange to clear the site for the building contractor.
