BLAZE IN PARIS
INVALIDES DAMAGED
FIRE FIGHTERS HAMPERED
(Reed. Dec. 24, 9 a.m.) PARIS, Dec. 23
Almost the entire Paris fire brigades were called out to subdue a fire in the historic Invalides building, containing Napoleon's tomb. Five fire engines reached the scene within three minutes of the alarm, which was given by taxi-drivers, but frozen pipes handicapped the initial efforts to check the outbreak. The damage was mostly confined to the upper floors.
Although the facade was blackened and a portion of the gilded roof and some of the windows were destroyed, the building was less badly damaged than was at first feared would be the case. No archives of importance were lost.
