MERTON HODGE'S LATEST
I ADAPTATION OF NOVEL STORY OF. AFRICAN FARM The latest 'work of Dr. Merton Hodge, the young New Zealand playwright, is the adaptation of Olive Schreiner's novel, "Story of An African Farm," which opened at the New Theatre, London, at the beginning of this month.
This novel is regarded as a classic, and Dr. Hodge has made a faithful adaptation. It is a women's play, not only by a woman author, but also has a woman backer and a woman manager.
Miss Elizabeth Haffenden spent five months in intensive research work for her new designs, finding much difficulty in discovering sprigged cottons and patterned ginghams worn on African farms in the days covered by the story. The designer unearthed them in furnishing departments of London stores, and hidden away on shelves in village shops found the necessary old-fashioned dress ornaments, and ribbons, braids, frills and rick-rack edgings.
