HOLIDAY WEATHER

FINE WEEK-END FOEEtiASi*

BREAK NEXT WEEK (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In a special forecast for the Christmas holiday period, the Director of Meteorological Services, Dr. E. Kidson said that on Thursday an anticyclone was advancing across the Tasman Sea and there was a prospect of an improvement in the weather over New Zealand as it approached. At the same time a tropical cyclone had developed in the Fiji Islands Group.

This cyclone had since moved in a south-south-easterly direction and yesterday morning had centred between the Kermadecs and Tonga causing pressure to fall temporarily over the 'North island on Thursday night and the winds to freshen over the South Island.

On the whole, however, there had been a rise of pressure and the southerlies had brought light showers to many places yesterday morning especially to the eastern and northern districts.

The weather was becoming more settled. The prospects for to-morrow were quite favourable for most dis,nc.s. The winds should decrease and vemperatures gradually rise. A fresh and rather vigorous disturbance had already developed over south-east Australia so that any prolonged spell of fine weather was still unlikely. Still, fair weather would probably be experienced on Sunday over most of the Dominion. On the west coast of the South Island and in the far south a renewal of unsettled conditions could be expected and, by Monday %s should have gradually become more general. Prospects lor ine middle portion of next week were not favourable.
