NEWS OF THE DAY

Bogged in Her Garden To be unable to move through being bogged up to her knees, and unable to let anyone know of her predicament, was the experience of a woman at Abbotsford, near Dunedin, during the week-end storm. While cutting a cabbage in the garden her feet went down in the mud created by the rain, till she was up to her knees. She had to remain until her daughter happened to look through the window 20 minutes later, and went to her assistance. It was impossible to haul her out, and eventually she sat on a box While she was dug out.

Trespassing on School Grounds Trespassing on school property at night, .particularly by young couples, has caused action to be taken by the police in Palmerston North. Offenders were dealt with recently, and although names were suppressed an indication was given that that leniency would not be extended in the future. The matter was referred to the .Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, by a deputation representative of the Wanganui Education Board, and tire Minister said he intended to instruct the police to press for publication of the names.

Safety-week Essay Competition

The schools of the Gisborne district were visited during the week by the borbugh traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Nowell, who lectured the students on the principles of road safety. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., has advised that he will donate two prizes of 10s Gd for the be.su essays written by senior and junior pupils, the subject being road .safety. The best of the essays also will be published in the Herald. The efforts will be judged by the editor for the Mayor’s prizes, and the best composition will be forwarded to the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple.

Another Old Building Passes The passing of another of Gisborne's older buildings, that known as the Victoria Billiard Saloon, in Peel street, furnishes further evidence of the lasting quality of the timber put into these structures 40 or 00 years ago. Much of the timber now being recovered is kauri, in firstclass condition, from superficial appearances. The building is being removed to make way for a new and modern shopping block, to be erected for Mr. F. Matthewson. The new premises will comprise two shops, with some office accommodation, and will fill a portion of the present gap in the Peel street building line between Barwick's Mart and the Cosmopolitan Club premises.
